Age Intervention Retinol Plus vs MD: Build Up Retinol Safely

Fijne lijntjes & rimpels Face care

Almost everyone who starts with retinol tells the same story: the first week feels great, in the second week the skin becomes tight, flaky around the nose and mouth, and the tube quietly disappears into a drawer. Retinol itself is rarely the problem — the way it is introduced usually is. Marini SkinSolutions, the science-based professional skincare brand that was known as Jan Marini until June 2025, offers two options within its Age Intervention line: Age Intervention Retinol Plus and Age Intervention Retinol Plus MD. Below you will read how they differ, which one suits your skin, and how to build up retinol calmly so you actually get to the results phase instead of quitting in week two.

Why retinol works — and why skin protests at first

Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and one of the most extensively studied ingredients in skincare. It supports the skin's natural renewal process, which is why it is used for fine lines, uneven texture, dullness, enlarged-looking pores and congestion. That renewal is exactly the reason for the adjustment phase: while the skin recalibrates its turnover speed, you can experience dryness, mild flaking, tightness or a temporary sensitivity to products that never bothered you before.

This adjustment period is normal and usually settles within a few weeks. What is not normal is burning, swelling, oozing or a rash — in that case stop and check in with a skin therapist or your doctor. Everything in between (a bit of flaking, a slightly tight feeling) is a signal to slow down the frequency, not to abandon retinol altogether.

Retinol Plus or Retinol Plus MD: which do you choose?

Age Intervention Retinol Plus is the version most people should start with. It is known for 0.3% retinol combined with peptides, so you get a meaningful retinol dose supported by ingredients that look after the skin at the same time. It is a logical first step if you have never used a retinoid, if your skin is dry, reactive or easily irritated, or if you are restarting after a long break.

Age Intervention Retinol Plus MD is the more advanced option in the line. It is intended for skin that is already comfortable with retinol — you use it several evenings a week or nightly without flaking, stinging or redness — and that is ready for a more intensive step. Because it belongs to the professional side of the range, it is often chosen in consultation with a skin professional.

The rule of thumb is simple: start lower, then move up only when your routine has become boring. If your skin has been calm for four to six weeks on your current retinol rhythm, stepping up makes sense. If you are still counting the days between applications, stay where you are — retinol rewards consistency, not force.

Building up retinol without irritation: a realistic schedule

Use this as a framework and adjust to what your skin tells you. Weeks 1 and 2: two evenings a week. Weeks 3 and 4: every other evening. From week 5: nightly, if — and only if — your skin stays comfortable. Some people stay at three or four evenings a week forever, and that is a perfectly good outcome.

A few practical rules that make the difference. Apply retinol in the evening only, on clean, completely dry skin. A pea-sized amount is enough for the entire face; more product does not mean faster results, only more irritation. Keep it away from the eyelids, the corners of the mouth and any broken skin. If your skin feels vulnerable, buffer: apply your moisturiser first, then the retinol, or sandwich the retinol between two thin layers of cream. Skip retinol on the evening of a facial treatment, a peel, waxing or after a day of intense sun exposure, and pick it up again once the skin feels normal.

What helps alongside retinol — and what to skip

Keep the rest of your routine simple while you adjust. A gentle cleanser, a supportive moisturiser and daily sun protection are the three pillars; SPF is non-negotiable, because renewing skin is more vulnerable to UV. Marini SkinSolutions covers this with its Marini Physical Protectant and Bioshield sun care within the five-step Skin Care Management System approach (cleanse, correct, renew, hydrate, protect).

What to postpone: strong acids in the same evening as retinol. If you love glycolic acid from the Bioglycolic line, use it on the evenings you skip retinol. Also park gritty scrubs, at-home devices and a stack of new actives until your retinol rhythm is stable — one variable at a time is how you find out what actually works for you. Vitamin C pairs well with retinol when you separate them: a stable vitamin C serum such as C-ESTA Face Serum in the morning, retinol at night. Retinol is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding; ask your doctor for alternatives.

Which Marini SkinSolutions products fit here

Age Intervention Retinol Plus MD

The more advanced retinol step in the Age Intervention line, for skin that already tolerates retinol well and wants to go further. Use it in the evening on dry skin, starting with two to three evenings a week and building up only when your skin stays calm; always combine with daily sun protection. Age Intervention® Gentle Cleanser

A retinol routine stands or falls on your cleanser. This gentle cleanser removes make-up and sunscreen without stripping the skin, which is exactly what you want during the adjustment phase. Use it morning and evening, with lukewarm water, and pat the skin dry before applying retinol. View Age Intervention® Gentle Cleanser

Age Intervention Face Cream

The buffer that keeps you on track. A richer face cream from the same line supports the skin barrier and makes flaking and tightness far less likely. Apply it after your retinol, or before it if your skin needs extra cushioning, and use it morning and evening as your comfort layer. View Age Intervention Face Cream

Age Intervention® Eye Cream

The eye area is thin, mobile and the first place to complain about retinol. Instead of stretching your retinol towards the eyes, give this zone its own dedicated care. Tap a small amount around the orbital bone morning and evening — this is also the product that makes the strict "no retinol on the eyelids" rule easy to follow. View Age Intervention® Eye Cream

Frequently asked questions

Is Marini SkinSolutions the same brand as Jan Marini?

Yes. Marini SkinSolutions (voorheen Jan Marini), founded in 1994 in San José, California, was officially renamed Marini SkinSolutions in June 2025. The formulas, active ingredients and professional standard are unchanged; what is new is the name and the sustainable, fully recyclable packaging — from silver to green, with pump bottles instead of jars and pipettes for better hygiene. The transition runs until mid-2026, so you may still receive products in the familiar Jan Marini look.

Do I have to start with Retinol Plus, or can I go straight to Retinol Plus MD?

If you have never used a retinoid, or if your skin is dry and reactive, start with Age Intervention Retinol Plus with its 0.3% retinol and peptides. Retinol Plus MD is the logical next step once you use retinol several evenings a week without flaking or stinging. If you are unsure, ask a skin therapist to assess your skin first.

My skin is flaking after two weeks — should I stop?

Usually not. Reduce the frequency (for example back to two evenings a week), buffer with a richer cream, keep your other actives on hold and stay strict with SPF. Most skins settle within a few weeks. If you experience burning, swelling or a persistent rash, stop and consult a skin therapist or your doctor.

Building up retinol is mostly a matter of patience and a routine that supports your barrier. Want to see the full range first?
