Pigmentation spots are dark patches that mainly appear on the face, décolleté and hands, but they can also develop on other parts of the body. The spots come in various shapes and sizes. How do pigmentation spots develop?

Pigmentation spots occur when the production of melanin (a natural pigment) is disrupted. The skin no longer has an even colour and clusters of pigment build up. Melanin production can be disrupted by sunlight, hormonal changes, skin damage and by certain illnesses and medicines.

Preventing new pigmentation spots is the most important thing. As sunlight is the biggest cause, it is wise to apply a product with at least SPF 30 every day. This not only helps prevent pigmentation spots, it also protects against premature skin ageing. Choose a day cream with a good SPF and a brightening ingredient such as vitamin C, niacinamide or liquorice extract. In the evening you can use a cream or serum with vitamin A to stimulate skin renewal. Use a product with glycolic acid once or twice a week to exfoliate the skin so the 'new skin' becomes visible.
