Rosacea

Rosacea is not a widely known skin condition, yet 1 in 5 women in Europe over the age of 30 experiences it. The condition causes the small blood vessels at the skin's surface to dilate, increasing blood flow. The result is red, sensitive skin. This redness may be accompanied by small bumps and spots and can cause a burning sensation. It often appears on the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Certain triggers can temporarily worsen rosacea, such as alcohol, heat, spicy food and stress. This is known as flushing.

What causes rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is still largely unknown. What we do know is that in people with this condition the upper layer of the skin barrier is damaged. In addition, a particular organism, Demodex folliculorum, is found twenty times more often on the skin. The cause and nature of the condition therefore still need further research.

Which ingredients help?

• Niacinamide - Helps strengthen the skin barrier, reduces redness and irritation and has a mild exfoliating effect.
• Liquorice root extract - Soothes and brightens. Has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.
• Vitamin C and E - Powerful antioxidants that strengthen the skin barrier, reduce cell damage and brighten.
• Azelaic acid - Reduces rosacea, acne and pigmentation spots.

Which skincare routine reduces rosacea?

Try to avoid triggers that worsen rosacea. Because the skin barrier is damaged, the skin can no longer protect itself properly against external factors. So apply sunscreen with at least SPF 15 every day. Use products for sensitive skin, don't cleanse too often and avoid products containing alcohol. It is also better to skip treatments such as scrubbing, connective tissue massage and microdermabrasion. If you want to exfoliate, use a peeling with salicylic acid or papain. These do not damage healthy skin, unlike products with abrasive particles.
