Dark Circles

Dark circles are bluish-purple or brown shadows under or around the eyes. They make the face look more tired, even though tiredness isn't necessarily the cause. Dark circles are often confused with eye bags. With eye bags, the eyes look puffier, as if a small ‘pouch’ hangs beneath the eye. With dark circles, it looks more like a slight hollow under the eye.

What causes dark circles?

Dark circles can have several causes. With bluish-purple circles, the eye area skin is very thin, so the blood vessels underneath show through. Brown circles are usually caused by hyperpigmentation, a form that tends to be hereditary. Bone structure can also create shadows under the eyes. Use sunscreen as well to prevent premature ageing, which can worsen dark circles and hyperpigmentation. Chemical sunscreen may irritate the eyes, so a physical (mineral) filter is preferable.
