What Is Hyaluronic Acid and What Does It Do for Your Skin?

Your skin feels tight by mid-morning, make-up settles into fine lines around your eyes, and your face looks tired even after a decent night's sleep. Nine times out of ten this is not a lack of oil, but a lack of water. Hyaluronic acid has become the best-known ingredient for exactly that problem — and also one of the most misunderstood. Below you will find a calm, honest explanation of what hyaluronic acid is, what it genuinely does for the skin, how to use it so it works, and which Declaré products make sense if your skin is dry, dull or easily irritated.

What hyaluronic acid actually is

Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your body. Picture a gel-like substance sitting between the living cells of the epidermis, the upper layer of your skin. It creates a moisture reservoir in living tissue and helps the skin layers stay intact and cushioned. Its great talent is water: hyaluronic acid absorbs moisture like a sponge, and one gram can bind up to six litres of water. That is why, when your skin feels dry and papery, it makes sense to top up that reservoir with products containing hyaluronic acid.

Despite the name, it is not an exfoliating acid like glycolic or salicylic acid. It does not peel, it does not thin the skin and it does not tingle. It is a moisture-binding ingredient, which is why it is generally well tolerated — also by sensitive skin.

What it does for your skin

In facial care, moisture is the magic word, and hyaluronic acid has become central to it. It supplies water and helps keep the skin elastic and comfortable. As you get older, your own production of hyaluronic acid declines. The skin holds less water, which is one of the reasons lines become more visible and the skin feels less firm. Applied topically, hyaluronic acid refills the moisture pockets in the skin, so fine lines and small wrinkles look noticeably softer. You often see the effect immediately: a fresher, plumper, more rested complexion.

Well-formulated hyaluronic care also does more than plump. A concentrated moisture layer supports the skin's own defences, helping it repel dirt and external irritants. Skin that is properly hydrated looks clearer and more even, and the complexion appears brighter and more radiant. Because the surface is smoother, light reflects more evenly — which is why hydrated skin simply looks healthier.

Different molecule sizes, different jobs

Not all hyaluronic acid behaves the same way. High-molecular hyaluronic acid stays mainly on the surface, where it forms a moisture film that smooths immediately and reduces water loss. Low-molecular forms are smaller and can settle into the upper layers of the skin, where they hydrate for longer and give a fuller feel from within. That is why many modern formulas combine several molecule sizes — a "triple" or multi-weight approach — so you get both instant smoothing and lasting hydration.

Good hydration also has an indirect effect on firmness: a well-hydrated, well-supported skin looks smoother and its contours appear better defined. It is important to stay realistic here. Cosmetics work on the visible condition and comfort of the skin; they are not injections and they do not restructure it. If you have a specific concern such as persistent redness, wounds or a skin condition, ask a skin therapist or your GP for advice.

How to use hyaluronic acid the right way

Hyaluronic acid attracts water — including water from the deeper layers of your skin. In a very dry indoor climate or in cold wind, that can backfire if you leave it uncovered. Two simple rules solve this:

1. Apply it to slightly damp skin. After cleansing, use a toner or hydrating mist and apply your serum while the skin is still moist. There is then plenty of water available to bind.
2. Always seal it in. Follow with a cream that suits your skin type. The cream locks the moisture in and prevents evaporation. Hyaluronic acid on its own, without a cream on top, rarely gives the full result.

Other practical points: apply morning and evening, on the face, neck and around the eyes; layer from thin to rich (mist, serum, cream); and use sun protection during the day, because UV exposure is one of the main causes of visible skin ageing. Hyaluronic acid combines easily with almost everything — vitamin C, retinol, niacinamide, peptides — and can even make stronger actives feel more comfortable. If your skin is sensitive, choose a formula developed for sensitive skin and introduce one new product at a time.

Which Declaré products suit this

Declaré is a Swiss brand founded in 1978 as the first brand devoted entirely to sensitive skin, and every product contains the SRC™ complex (Sensitivity Reducing Complex), which lowers the skin's reactivity and strengthens the barrier. All products are dermatologically tested on sensitive skin, which makes them a sensible choice if your skin is both dry and easily irritated.

Declaré Ocean's Best Hyalurontriple Booster

A concentrated moisture booster from the Hydro Balance line, built around a combination of hyaluronic acid forms for both immediate smoothing and deeper, longer-lasting hydration. Ideal if your skin feels tight, looks dull or shows fine dehydration lines. Use a few drops morning and evening on slightly damp skin, before your cream; you can also mix it into your day cream during dry winter months.

Declaré Hyaluron Effect Softener Mousse

One of Declaré's hero products, praised by the German trade press. This light mousse-textured softener prepares the skin after cleansing: it hydrates, softens and helps the products that follow absorb better. Perfect as the first step of your routine, especially if you find heavy layers uncomfortable. Apply to the face and neck with your hands and continue immediately with a serum or cream.

Declaré Vitahyaluron Triple Hyaluron Cream

The cream that seals everything in. With a triple hyaluronic acid concept, it delivers moisture at different levels and leaves the skin feeling supple and comfortable all day. Suitable for dry to normal skin that needs more plumpness and smoothness. Use morning and/or evening as the final step, after your booster or serum.

Frequently asked questions

Can hyaluronic acid dry out my skin?

Not if you use it correctly. Hyaluronic acid binds water, so it needs water to work with. Apply it to slightly damp skin and always follow with a cream that locks the moisture in. Used on bone-dry skin in a very dry environment and left uncovered, it can make the skin feel tighter rather than softer.

Is hyaluronic acid suitable for sensitive skin?

Generally yes. It is a moisture-binding ingredient, not an exfoliating acid, so it does not irritate or tingle. What matters is the rest of the formula. Declaré develops all its products for sensitive skin with the SRC™ complex and has them dermatologically tested on sensitive skin. If you react to almost everything, patch test a new product behind the ear or on the inner forearm first, and consult a skin therapist if in doubt.

At what age should I start using hyaluronic acid?

There is no fixed age. Your own production declines gradually over the years, but dehydrated skin can occur at any age — through central heating, air conditioning, sun, stress or too much cleansing. If your skin feels tight or looks dull, hyaluronic acid is useful straight away. As a preventive step from your late twenties onwards it fits easily into a routine.
