You look in the mirror and the first thing you see is redness. Cheeks that flush after a hot drink, a nose that stays pink long after a walk in the wind, small visible vessels, sometimes bumps or a burning, tight feeling. Skin with rosacea or a rosacea tendency is not simply "sensitive" – it reacts faster, stays reactive longer and dislikes almost everything that promises quick results. The good news: a quiet, predictable routine of four steps usually does more than a cupboard full of active products. Below you read how to build that routine, what to avoid, and which Declaré products suit skin that is easily triggered.
What is actually happening in rosacea-prone skin
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition in which blood vessels in the face react strongly and the skin barrier is often weakened. Diagnosis and medical treatment belong with a doctor or dermatologist — skincare is supportive, not a cure. What skincare can do is reduce the number of triggers your skin has to deal with each day. A weakened barrier lets water escape and irritating substances in, which keeps the skin in a state of alert. Strengthening that barrier and lowering reactivity is exactly the principle behind Declaré: every product contains the SRC™ complex (Sensitivity Reducing Complex), developed to lower the skin's irritability and support the barrier. Declaré has focused on sensitive skin since 1978 and every product is dermatologically tested on sensitive skin.
Step 1: Cleanse gently, without stripping
Cleansing is where most rosacea routines go wrong. Foaming gels with a high pH, hot water, rough cloths and scrubs all remove the lipids your skin needs to stay calm. Choose a mild milk or a soft, soap-free cleanser and use lukewarm — never hot — water. Massage briefly, no more than thirty seconds, and pat dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing. Once a day is often enough for dry, reactive skin: cleanse thoroughly in the evening, and in the morning rinse with water or use the same mild cleanser if you wear SPF and makeup daily. Skip mechanical scrubs and strong acids completely while your skin is flaring.
Step 2: Soothe visible redness
After cleansing, the skin is at its most receptive. This is the moment for a calming serum or a targeted concentrate for redness and visible vessels. Apply it to slightly damp skin with flat hands, pressing rather than rubbing — friction is a trigger in itself. Give a soothing product time: reactive skin usually needs four to six weeks of consistent use before you can judge the effect. Resist the urge to switch products every week; the constant change is often what keeps skin unsettled.
Step 3: Hydrate and rebuild the barrier
Rosacea-prone skin can be dehydrated and feel tight even when it looks oily in places. A cream with a comfortable, non-occlusive texture keeps moisture in the skin and reduces the stinging that comes with dryness. Look for calm, simple textures without perfume-heavy character, strong essential oils, menthol or alcohol high in the ingredient list. Apply while the skin is still slightly damp for better comfort. In winter, a slightly richer layer at night helps; in summer a lighter texture is usually more pleasant.
Step 4: Protect every single day
UV radiation is one of the most common and most underestimated rosacea triggers. Daily sun protection is not an optional extra — it is the step with the most visible long-term benefit for redness and visible capillaries. Use a broad-spectrum SPF every morning, all year round, and reapply on days outdoors. Combine it with practical habits: a hat, shade around midday, and avoiding extreme temperature swings. Also keep a small trigger diary for a few weeks; alcohol, spicy food, hot showers, saunas, stress and certain sports intensities often show a clear pattern.

Frequently asked questions
Can skincare make rosacea go away?
No. Rosacea is a chronic condition that a doctor or dermatologist should assess and treat. A well-chosen routine can help calm the skin, support the barrier and visibly reduce redness and discomfort, but it does not replace medical care. If your symptoms worsen or you develop bumps, pustules or eye complaints, contact your GP or a dermatologist.
How many products do I really need?
Four are enough: a mild cleanser, a soothing serum or concentrate, a moisturising cream and a daily SPF. Introduce one new product at a time and give it at least two weeks before adding another, so you can tell exactly what your skin responds to.
Can I use exfoliants or retinol with rosacea?
During a flare, leave them out. When your skin is calm and stable, some people tolerate a mild treatment occasionally, but always build up slowly and stop at the first sign of burning or lasting redness. Discuss stronger actives with a skin therapist or dermatologist first.
