Lotion Yon-Ka PS or PNG: Which Face Lotion Suits Your Skin?

You have just cleansed your face. Either the skin feels slightly tight, or a few hours later it is shiny again — and somewhere in the back of your mind sits the question: do I really need a toner? With Yon-Ka the answer is a little different than with most brands, because Lotion Yon-Ka is not a leftover step from the eighties. It is the aromatic face lotion that made this French family house famous, and it comes in two versions: PS and PNG. Choosing the right one is the difference between a bottle you reach for twice a day with pleasure and one that quietly gathers dust on the shelf.

What Lotion Yon-Ka is — and what it is not

Yon-Ka was founded in 1954 by the Mühlethaler family and is still a family business, with formulation and production in France. The house pioneered phyto-aromatherapy: plant actives combined with essential oils. Its signature is the Quintessence complex — five essential oils (lavender, geranium, rosemary, cypress and thyme) found in the cabin treatments and in most of the home care range. In the lotion, that complex is exactly what you smell the moment you mist: herbal, green, unmistakably Yon-Ka. For many people it is the reason the routine sticks; a scent you look forward to is a routine you keep.

What it is not: a harsh, drying tonic meant to make your skin squeak. The lotion is used after cleansing to lift the last traces of cleanser, hard water and impurities, to refresh the skin and to prepare it for the serum or cream that follows. Both versions are vegan, cruelty-free, free from parabens and contain 99% ingredients of natural origin. And both can simply be misted over the face during the day when your skin (or your mood) needs a reset.

PS or PNG: the difference in one look

The letters are French shorthand. PS stands for peau sèche: dry skin. PNG stands for peau normale à grasse: normal to oily skin. Same ritual, same aromatic signature, different balance of comfort versus freshness.

Choose Lotion Yon-Ka PS if your skin feels tight after cleansing, if it turns rough or flaky in winter, if central heating and cold wind make it uncomfortable, or if foundation clings to dry patches around the nose and cheeks. Skin that is thin, easily reactive and quick to feel "stripped" usually prefers this version.

Choose Lotion Yon-Ka PNG if your T-zone is shiny by midday, if pores look enlarged around the nose, if you regularly see congestion or blackheads, or if your skin is combination and behaves differently from cheek to forehead. Many men also prefer PNG for its fresher finish.

Still unsure? Do the honest test: cleanse in the evening, apply nothing at all and wait half an hour. Tight and slightly rough? PS. Comfortable, with a first sheen appearing on the nose and forehead? PNG. And remember that skin is seasonal — plenty of people use PNG through summer and switch to PS when the heating goes on. Using both is not indecision, it is paying attention.

How to use it: the daily ritual

Always after cleansing, morning and evening. There are two ways, and neither is wrong.

As a mist: hold the bottle about twenty centimetres from your face, close your eyes and mist generously over face and neck. Let it settle for a few seconds, then pat gently with your fingertips. Do not rinse and do not wipe it away.

On cotton: saturate a cotton pad and sweep it over the face, avoiding the immediate eye area. Useful if you want to check that all cleanser residue is gone, or if you wear makeup daily.

Apply your serum and cream while the skin is still slightly damp — products spread more easily and the skin feels more comfortable. Beyond the routine, the lotion travels well: a mist after sport, on a plane, at your desk in the afternoon, before makeup to smooth the canvas, or after shaving instead of a stinging aftershave.

Combining it with the rest of your routine

The lotion is step two, never step one. It is not a cleanser and it will not remove makeup or sunscreen on its own. The order that works: cleanse, mist, treat, moisturise, protect.

Match your cleanser to the same logic as your lotion. Dry, sensitive or makeup-wearing skin is usually happiest with a milk texture; oily, combination or congested skin often prefers a gel that rinses off with water. In the evening you can combine the two: milk first to dissolve makeup, gel after to purify, then the lotion to finish.

Honest expectations and common mistakes

A face lotion refreshes, comforts and prepares — it is not a treatment for acne, rosacea or eczema. If your skin is inflamed, persistently painful or not improving, speak to a skin therapist or your GP first; a good routine works alongside that advice, not instead of it.

The mistakes we see most often: rinsing the lotion off (don't), scrubbing with a dry cotton pad (be gentle), spraying directly into the eyes (keep them closed and avoid the eye contour), and picking a version based on what a friend uses rather than on how your own skin behaves. If your skin is very reactive, test the product on the inner forearm or behind the ear first. Because these formulas contain essential oils, we advise anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding to check with their doctor or esthetician before use. Keep the bottle closed, away from direct sunlight, and respect the period-after-opening shown on the packaging.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to rinse Lotion Yon-Ka off?

No. Mist it over the face and neck after cleansing, let it settle for a few seconds and pat it in with your fingertips. Leaving it on the skin is exactly the point: it refreshes, comforts and prepares the skin for your serum and cream, which absorb more easily on slightly damp skin.

Can I use both PS and PNG?

Yes, and many people do. Skin changes with the seasons, with travel and with hormones, so PNG in summer and PS in winter is a perfectly logical pairing. You can also work by zone: PNG on a shiny T-zone and PS on drier cheeks. Choose whichever version matches how your skin feels that week.

Is Lotion Yon-Ka suitable for sensitive skin or during pregnancy?

The PS version is generally the more comforting choice for skin that reacts easily; test it first on the inner forearm or behind the ear. Because the formulas contain essential oils, we recommend that anyone pregnant or breastfeeding checks with their doctor or esthetician before use, and that persistent redness or irritation is always discussed with a skin therapist or GP.
